What is Bison?

What is Bison? Bison is a member of the Bovine family. Bison meat is similar to beef, but it is leaner and is usually grass-fed. According to Healthline, “Bison is an excellent source of iron, zinc, phosphorus, niacin, selenium, and vitamins B12 and B6. In a 4-oz serving, it contains 166 calories, 24 grams of protein, 8 grams of fat, less than 1 gram of carbs, and 3 grams of saturated fat.”

Furthermore, Bison is a leaner meat and is a healthier choice if you’re looking to reduce your fat and calorie intake. The flavor is richer than Beef and has more of a flavor profile on its own (in my own personal opinion). Bison also has finer fat marbling which makes it softer and more tender than Beef.

In conclusion, Bison is a leaner and more flavorful meat which makes it an excellent choice for all.

Bison meat comes from the animal, Bison, which is part of the Bovine family.

Where Can You Buy Ground Bison?

The recipes included in this blog post contain Ground Bison which I typically purchase at local grocery and specialty meat markets. The following places are recommendations purely from my personal experience. As always, I’d encourage you to shop local, ask your butcher(s) where you can purchase this meat, and try out different places until finding the brand you enjoy most.

In conclusion, Ground Bison is almost just as popular in local grocery stores as it is in specialty markets. If you are out shopping and unable to locate it, ask your Butcher for help. This is truly a lean meat to try and one you and your family will come back to.
