Sourdough French Bread

Sourdough French Bread is crusty and tangy, and the perfect vessel for a variety of proteins, fresh herbs, butter, and more. Furthermore, use this Sourdough French Bread to make a classic Cajun-styled Po Boy, dip it into Au Jus, use it as a Crostini, or spread herby-garlic-cheese butter to make an elevated version of garlic bread.

This recipe incorporates Sourdough Starter within the Sourdough French Bread. Finally, incorporating Sourdough Starter and allowing the dough to ferment for 8+ hours, significantly reduces the gluten within the dough.

Making the Sourdough French Bread Dough

  1. First, in a Bosch Univeral Mixer, combine all of the ingredients.
  2. Next, place the lids on top of the mixer and turn it on to speed 3.
  3. Then, mix the ingredients until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. Finally, turn the mixer off and remove the bread dough.

First, in a Bosch Univeral Mixer, combine all of the ingredients.

Turn the Mixer on to Speed 3

Once all of the ingredients are in the Bosch Universal Mixer, turn to a speed 3 and mix until combined.

Turn the Mixer Off When the Dough Forms

Then, mix the ingredients until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl. Finally, turn the mixer off and remove the bread dough.

Let the Sourdough French Bread Dough Rise

  1. First, form the bread dough into a ball.
  2. Next, place the bread dough into a lightly oiled bowl or Banneton Bowl.
  3. Then, place a tea towel over the Banneton Bowl and in a warm area.
  4. Next, leave the dough to rise for at least 8 hours (you can go longer if you’d like).

Cover the Banneton Bowl with a Towel and Let the Dough Rise

Then, place a tea towel over the Banneton Bowl and in a warm area. (Note: If you don’t have time to wait for the dough to rise, try the Instant Pot Dough Rise Method). Next, leave the dough to rise for at least 8 hours (you can go longer if you’d like).

After the 8-Hour Rise

Finally, the Sourdough French Bread has risen for 8 hours, doubled in size, and is ready to be formed into loaves.

Forming the Sourdough French Bread Loaves

  1. First, cut the dough in half.
  2. Next, flatten each half to a rectangle by using your fingertips to gently deflate the dough.
  3. Then, tightly roll the dough on the long side and pinch the ends to seal them.
  4. Next, place the dough on a lightly greased sheet pan or French Bread Pan.
  5. Finally, cover the dough with greased plastic wrap or a slightly damp tea towel and let it rise for an additional 1 1/2 – 2 hours.

Place the Dough on a Sheet Pan

Next, place the dough on a lightly greased sheet pan or French Bread Pan. Then, using a sharp knife or lame, score the loaves with 4 diagonal slashes. Finally, cover the dough with a damp tea towel and let it rise for an additional 1 1/2 – 2 hours.

  1. First, preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Next, bake the Sourdough French Bread loves. for 25-30 minutes.
    • The loaves should be golden on the outside and sound hollow on the inside when tapped.
  3. Finally, once the loaves are baked, place them on a wire cooling rack to cool slightly prior to cutting in.

  • 2 tbsp. Coconut Sugar
  • 1/3 c. Avocado Oil
  • 4 - 4 1/2 c. King Arthur's Organic, All-Purpose Flour
