Sorrel Jam

Sorrel Jam is sweet, tart, and festive! Made with five ingredients, this jam will become a year-round and special holiday treat for you and your family. Furthermore, you can use this Sorrel Jam as a preserved spread for Sourdough Sliced Bread, Sourdough Discard Drop Biscuits, Sourdough Pancakes, the filling inside Vegan Empanada Dough or Sourdough Thumbprint Cookies, dessert bars, and more!

What is Jamaican Sorrel?

Jamaican Sorrel is a sweet, gingery, wine-colored Jamaican drink that is part of the Christmas tradition at holiday parties. Sorrel has a similar taste to Hibiscus and is sweet and tart.

Sorrel Jam Ingredients

Steeping the Sorrel

  1. First, place a bag of Sorrel and 4 1/2 c. of water into a Nonstick, All-Clad medium-sized pot.
  2. Next, bring the mixture to a boil.
  3. Then, once the mixture is boiling, turn off the heat and pop a lid onto the pot.
  4. Finally, allow the Sorrel to steep in the water for at least 1 hour.

First, place a bag of Sorrel and 4 1/2 c. of water into a Nonstick, All-Clad medium-sized pot.

Bring the Sorrel to a Boil

Next, bring the mixture to a boil. Then, once the mixture is boiling, turn off the heat and pop a lid onto the pot.

Steep the Sorrel for 1 Hour

Finally, allow the Sorrel to steep in the water for at least 1 hour.

Straining the Steeped Sorrel

  1. First, cut a sheet of Cheesecloth or use a fine-mesh strainer, and strain the Sorrel pulp from the juice.
  2. Next, pour the juice, pulp, Coconut Sugar, and Cinnamon into a Ninja Blender.
  3. Then, place the lid onto the blender and blend for about 1 minute at the highest speed (this will break up the pulp more).
  4. Finally, pour the mixture into the same Nonstick, All-Clad Pot.

First, cut a sheet of Cheesecloth or use a fine-mesh strainer, and strain the Sorrel pulp from the juice.

Pour All Ingredients Into a Blender

Next, pour the juice, pulp, Coconut Sugar, and Cinnamon into a Ninja Blender.

Blend the ingredients until you get a smooth consistency.

Pour Sorrel Mixture into Pot

Finally, pour the mixture into the same Nonstick, All-Clad Pot.

Making the Jam

  1. First, heat the Nonstick, All-Clad Pot over medium-high heat.
  2. Next, bring the mixture to a boil, and then add the Vegan Pectin.
  3. Then, cover the pot with the lid and reduce the heat to low.
  4. Finally, allow the Sorrel Jam mixture to simmer for 20 minutes.

First, heat the Nonstick, All-Clad Pot over medium-high heat. Next, bring the mixture to a boil.

Reduce the Heat to a Simmer and Simmer for 20 Minutes

Add the Pectin
Then, add the Pectin, cover the pot, and reduce the heat to a simmer.

Blend the Jam Mixture

  1. First, pour the mixture into the Ninja Blender, again.
  2. Next, puree the Sorrel Jam until smooth.
  3. Then, cut another piece of Cheesecloth over a Mason Jar and strain any excess pulp from the liquid jam mixture.
  4. Next, pop a lid onto the jar.
  5. Finally, place the Sorrel Jam jar in the refrigerator and let it set up for at least 12 hours. Enjoy!

First, pour the mixture into the Ninja Blender, again. Next, puree the Sorrel Jam until smooth.

Strain Any Excess Pulp and Pour it Into a Jar

Then, cut another piece of Cheesecloth over a Mason Jar and strain any excess pulp from the liquid jam mixture.

The Sorrel pulp will stay in the Cheesecloth, and the juice will drain into the jar.

Then, allow the mixture to set up for at least 12 hours prior to enjoying.

  • 2 c. Sorrel Juice (strained from the pulp)
  • 1 1/2 c. Raw Honey, Maple Syrup, or Coconut Sugar
  • 1 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
  • 1-2 tbsp. Vegan Pectin

Notes

Sorrel Jam is great to make ahead because it is similar to fruit jam. It takes time to set up in the refrigerator prior to use and will keep for 3 months in the refrigerator in a jar.
