Pesto Breadsticks

Pesto Breadsticks are the ultimate crowd-pleasing appetizer. These addicting breadsticks are made with Sourdough Pizza Dough, Spinach Walnut, or Spinach Pistachio Pesto, mixed Italian cheeses, twisted into a breadstick, and brushed with melted butter. Then, they are baked in the oven until they’re crispy on the exterior and tender on the interior. Finally, these are the ultimate appetizers or side dishes and will accompany various meals.

Pesto Breadsticks Ingredients

These addicting breadsticks are made with Sourdough Pizza Dough, Spinach Walnut, or Spinach Pistachio Pesto, mixed Italian cheeses, twisted into a breadstick, and brushed with melted butter.

Rolling Out the Pizza Dough

  1. After the dough has risen, divide the dough in half.
  2. Next, on a lightly floured surface and using a rolling pin, roll each of the sections into a rectangular shape (almost like you’re making Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls).
  3. Finally, place the rolled-out dough onto lightly-floured parchment paper.

Next, on a lightly floured surface and using a rolling pin, roll each of the sections into a rectangular shape (almost like you’re making Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls).

Finally, place the rolled-out dough onto lightly-floured parchment paper.

Building and Cutting the Breadsticks

  1. First, take one rectangular piece of dough and place it in front of you.
  2. Next, take 1/2 cup of Pesto and spread it along the top of the rolled-out dough.
  3. Then, sprinkle the cheese generously over the Pesto.
  4. Next, fold the dough in half with the shorter sides matching up so that the cheese and Pesto are stacked inside.
  5. Finally, using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into approximately 12-18, 1-inch strips.

Next, take 1/2 cup of Pesto and spread it along the top of the rolled-out dough.

Then, sprinkle the cheese generously over the Pesto.

Next, fold the dough in half with the shorter sides matching up so that the cheese and Pesto are stacked inside.

Finally, using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into approximately 12-18, 1-inch strips.

Twisting the Breadsticks

  1. First, twist each strip gently keeping as much of the filling inside as possible.
  2. Next, repeat this process until all of the breadsticks have been “twisted.”
  3. Then, place the breadsticks onto a nonstick or silicone-sheet-lined baking sheet about 1 inch apart.
  4. Finally, cover the baking sheet with a slightly damp tea towel, set it in the refrigerator, and let it rest for 30 minutes.

First, twist each strip gently keeping as much of the filling inside as possible.

Then, place the breadsticks onto a nonstick or silicone-sheet-lined baking sheet about 1 inch apart.

Baking and Serving the Pesto Breadsticks

  1. After about 25 minutes of the breadsticks resting in the refrigerator, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Next, melt the butter in a microwave-safe mixing bowl.
  3. Then, remove the baking sheet with the breadsticks from the refrigerator and discard the tea towel.
  4. Next, gently brush them with the melted butter.
  5. Then, lightly dust the top of the breadsticks with Kinder’s Garlic and Herb Seasoning (if desired).
  6. Finally, bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the breadsticks are golden brown. Serve immediately!

Notes

If you do not have time to make or use homemade pizza dough, you can absolutely use store-bought pizza dough for this recipe. The cooking times may vary a bit depending on the thickness of the dough.
